One more footnote about when the transmitter was here: In the 1960s, the FCC, as somewhat of an experiment, authorized fulltime AM stations to begin using their daytime power and pattern at 4:00 AM local time to provide improved pre-sunrise coverage. During those early morning hours, WILS was received in such faraway places as Sweden and New Zealand. The Commission revisited its presunrise rules in the 1970s, restricting presunrise operations to 500 watts at 6:00 AM and thus effectively ending those DX opportunities.
